Mound City National Cemetery, established during the Civil War, holds Union and Confederate soldiers treated nearby. Listed in 1997, it remains a solemn tribute to sacrifice and the region’s wartime history.

Mound City National Cemetery tells a powerful story of sacrifice and Civil War history. Located in southern Illinois, it spans 14 acres at the junction of two historic roads. Of the more than 9,600 individuals buried here, over half—more than 2,700 unknown—served during the Civil War, preserving their enduring legacy.
