Museums

The Field Museum of Natural History is one of the largest in the world, visit and see the nearly 40 million specimens and artifacts in its collection.

Upon entering the Field Museum, you'll be greeted by a friendly face. In fact, it's impossible to miss the prehistoric skull that towers over the museum's second floor balcony. This newest resident of Stanley Field Hall is a cast of a titanosaur, the largest dinosaur ever discovered. Named Máximo (Spanish for “maximum” or “most," a nod to the titanosaur’s enormous size and Argentinian homeland), the cast measures 122 feet from head to tail. That's longer than two accordion CTA buses end-to-end!

Elsewhere in the museum, you can discover Sue, the world's largest and most complete T. rex ever found, or descend into an Egyptian tomb and see 23 Egyptian mummies and 5,000-year-old hieroglyphics. Shrink to 1/100th of your natural size and get a bug's-eye view at Underground Adventure Come nose-to-nose with the man-eating lions of Tsavo, walk among dinosaurs in Evolving Planet, or explore 13,000 years of history from the Ice Age Mammoth hunters to the temples of the Aztecs in the Ancient Americas Hall. Experience Chicago’s only completely digital 3-D theater featuring "Waking the T.Rex." Open daily 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the last admission at 4 p.m.

Some exhibits require additional ticket. Ongoing: Underground Adventure; Evolving Planet, Ancient Americas, Inside Ancient Egypt.
