Historic Sites
Dedicated in 1893, the Haymarket Monument honors the activists of the 1886 Haymarket Affair. It remains a gathering place, symbolizing early labor struggles and the ongoing fight for workers’ rights.
Following the Haymarket Affair, five executed defendants were buried at Waldheim Cemetery (now Forest Home) in Forest Park, Illinois. In 1893, the Pioneer Aid and Support Association commissioned the Haymarket Martyrs' Monument, designed by Albert Weinert. The 16-foot granite and bronze sculpture features a woman guarding a fallen worker and includes the quote: “The day will come when our silence will be more powerful...” It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1997.
