Frank Lloyd Wright's Unity Temple

875 Lake St., Oak Park, IL 60301

Museums

A National Historic Landmark since 1970 and UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2019, Frank Lloyd Wright's Unity Temple is an icon of modern architecture and a destination for tens of thousands of visitors each year.

It was Wright's first public commission and is the only surviving public building from his golden Prairie period. Frank Lloyd Wright’s Unity Temple (1905–1908) in Oak Park stands as the architect’s most significant public work from his Chicago years. This monumental, cube‑shaped structure of exposed reinforced concrete shelters a four‑level sanctuary and adjoining community hall, harmonizing form, function, and light. Dedicated in 1909, Unity Temple broke ecclesiastical conventions and remains a pioneer of modern architecture, designated both a National Historic Landmark and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
